Morphine played low rock: guitar-less, sax, bass and drums-driven implied grunge.

What they lacked in guitar, the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based trio made up for in true musical innovation. Their passion for the groove and the noir sounds and situations that Mark Sandman, Dana Colley and Billy Conway created out of a minimalist palette were laid bare in their music: saxophone rock immersed in sordid daydreams. With the release of their debut album, GOOD, through CURE FOR PAIN, YES, LIKE SWIMMING and the most recent THE NIGHT, the band explored the edges of rock with an unerring sense of style and self and inimitable power.

Bootleg: Detroit (RCD 10495) is the only authorized release of a live recording of Morphine. Recorded by a fan on March 7, 1994 at St. Andrew’s Hall in Detroit, Michigan, it was edited and mixed under the late Mark Sandman’s supervision. He also laid out, and delivered, the low-fi artwork for the album, prior to the band’s final tour in Italy.
